Grab your cowboy hat and boots and gear up for the rodeo at Dirt Oval 66! The rodeo comes to the Joliet entertainment hub for the first time with traditional rodeo excitement plus more for a family-friendly summer extravaganza.
Background of the Rodeo
A centuries-long tradition, bull riding and taming has roots in Mexican and Spanish ranch culture. The rodeo became popular in the American West to showcase skills of cattle ranchers throughout the country. Competitions in roping, riding, barrel racing, and more have been entertaining onlookers for decades as professionals worked to be the best in the business.
Rodeo Competitions
The Dirt Oval Rodeo will feature a combination of timed races and rough stock competitions common to a traditional rodeo. Timed races include barrel racing, breakaway roping, team roping, and steer wrestling. Rough stock competitions include bareback riding, bull and bronc riding, and freestyle bullfighting.
Barrel Racing is a competition to see who the best in speed in agility is. Riders trek around patterns of barrels on their horses with advanced turns as they compete to see who can make it through the course quickest. The challenge? Don’t knock over the barrels! The Calf Roping, Breakaway Roping, and Team Roping events see individuals (and teams) competing to rope a calf in a timely manner with different methods and challenges. Steer Wrestling is an adrenaline-fueled race where riders jump off their horses onto steers, one of the more dangerous and advanced competitions at the rodeo.
The rodeo’s “rough stock competitions” showcase a variety of bull and bronc riding. From classic Bareback Riding to miniature bulls and broncs, the goal of these competitions is to ride the longest. Finally, rodeo clowns avoid bulls in Freestyle Bullfighting by any means necessary. You’ll want to find out who lasts the longest!
